About Senior Move Management

What is a Senior Move Manager?

A Senior Move Manager (SMM) is a professional who specializes in helping older adults and their families through the transition of relocating. Unlike traditional movers, SMMs provide comprehensive support that includes downsizing guidance, sorting, donation coordination, packing, move-day management, unpacking, and settling in — all with specialized sensitivity to the emotional aspects of the process. Gentle Transitions' team is trained in Senior Move Management best practices.

How is a Senior Move Manager different from a regular moving company?

Traditional moving companies focus on physically transporting belongings from Point A to Point B. A Senior Move Manager provides a holistic transition service — starting weeks before moving day with sorting and downsizing, managing every detail of the move itself, and continuing after the move with unpacking, room arrangement, and a settling-in check. We address the emotional and logistical dimensions of senior transitions that standard movers aren't equipped to handle.

Do I need to be local to Richmond to use your services?

We primarily serve Richmond, VA and surrounding communities including Henrico, Chesterfield, Glen Allen, Midlothian, Short Pump, Mechanicsville, Colonial Heights, Petersburg, Bon Air, and Hanover County. Please contact us to discuss your specific situation.

Services & Process

What services does Gentle Transitions offer?

We offer a full range of senior moving services: downsizing & decluttering, professional packing & unpacking, assisted living transitions, estate cleanouts, floor plan & space planning, and full-service move coordination. We can handle as much or as little as your family needs.

How do we get started?

It starts with a free consultation — either by phone or in-home visit. We'll learn about your loved one's situation, timeline, and specific needs. From there, we create a personalized plan and provide a transparent, itemized quote. There's no obligation and no pressure.

How far in advance should I contact you?

We recommend reaching out at least 4–6 weeks before the anticipated move date, especially for complex transitions. That said, we understand that some situations arise quickly, and we do our best to accommodate urgent timelines. Please call us as soon as you're aware of the need.

Do you work with assisted living facilities directly?

Yes — we have established relationships with many senior living communities throughout the Richmond area. We coordinate with facility staff on move-in logistics, room access, elevator scheduling, and more to ensure the smoothest possible transition.

Pricing & Practicalities

How much do senior moving services cost?

Costs vary based on the scope of services, the size of the home, and the complexity of the move. We offer packages starting from approximately $500 for essential services. Full-service moves typically range from $1,200 to $4,000+. We always provide a transparent, itemized quote after our free consultation — no surprises.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes — Gentle Transitions is fully licensed and insured in Virginia. Our team members are background-checked and trained in senior move management best practices. Your family's belongings and your trust are protected.

Do you do the physical moving (furniture/truck)?

We can coordinate the physical moving with our trusted, licensed moving partners, or work alongside your preferred movers. Our move management services cover the planning, organization, packing, and settling-in — we ensure the physical move runs smoothly regardless of which movers are used.

What happens to items we don't want to keep?

We coordinate respectful disposal of items not coming to the new home. This can include donation drop-offs or pickup from local charities, estate sale coordination, auction house referrals, family distribution, and responsible junk removal. We take care of the logistics so families don't have to.

Emotional & Family Concerns

My parent is resistant to moving. Can you help?

This is one of the most common challenges families face. Our team is experienced in working compassionately with seniors who are hesitant or resistant. We're patient, non-threatening, and allow the senior to lead the conversation about their belongings. Often, having a neutral professional present helps ease the process. We also offer guidance to family members on how to approach these conversations.

What if my parent has dementia or memory issues?

We have experience working with seniors who have cognitive challenges, and we adapt our approach accordingly. We work closely with family caregivers and any medical team to ensure the transition is handled with extra sensitivity and appropriate pacing. Please mention this during your consultation so we can plan appropriately.

Can family members be present during the move?

Absolutely — and often we encourage it. Having familiar faces present can comfort your loved one during the transition. We welcome family involvement and will coordinate closely with you throughout the entire process.
